Greece

The birthplace of wine - Assyrtiko, Agiorgitiko and Xinomavro from sun-soaked islands and mountain slopes.

Greece is where wine culture began, yet its modern wines remain one of the world's best-kept secrets. The ancient Greek colonists spread viticulture across the Mediterranean, and today a new generation of growers is rediscovering hundreds of indigenous varieties.

The headline grape is Assyrtiko, the mineral white of Santorini, grown on a volcanic island with no topsoil and no irrigation, yielding wines of piercing lemon-and-salt character. Red star Agiorgitiko from Nemea is soft and fruity; Xinomavro from Naoussa is savoury, age-worthy and often compared to Nebbiolo.

Greek wine is bright, food-friendly and increasingly excellent value - perfect with the country's olive oil, seafood, lamb and citrus cuisine.

🍷 Wine fact: The word 'wine' comes from the Greek 'oinos', and Greece produced wine continuously for at least 6,500 years - among the oldest wine cultures on earth.
