Europe
Portugal
The home of Port and a treasure-trove of native grapes that most wine lovers have barely discovered yet.
Portugal is Europe's great underrated wine country. Everyone knows Port, the fortified wine of the Douro, but the still wines are just as exciting - powerful Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz reds from the Douro Valley, bright mineral whites from Vinho Verde, and the savoury reds of Bairrada and Dão.
Portuguese wine is built on indigenous grapes - more than 250 native varieties - grown mostly in schist and granite soils. The result is a style all its own: savoury, structured reds and saline, food-friendly whites that go remarkably well with food.
Prices remain moderate by Old World standards, making Portugal one of the best value wine countries for both everyday drinking and cellar-worthy purchases.

- › A bottle of Vintage Port needs 20+ years in bottle; LBV and tawny-with-an-age are for drinking now. Serve Vintage Port after decanting.
