white grape
Albillo
Old bush vines on the chalky, high-altitude slopes of Ribera del Duero.
Known as: Albillo Mayor, Albillo Real
Albillo is the ancient white of Ribera del Duero, a heritage variety planted among the reds on some of Spain's oldest ungrafted bush vines.
Its golden-apple fruit, anise lift and gentle honey are a fascinating counterpoint to the region's famous Tempranillo, and aged white versions gain wonderful depth.
For the buyer, Albillo is an insider's white — scarce, characterful and looking increasingly fashionable as old-vine bottlings appear.
