Spain

Ribera del Duero

North-central Spain, along the Duero river in the province of Burgundy, over 800m above sea level.

High continental altitude with harsh winters, hot summers and strong diurnal swings - extreme but perfect for Tempranillo.

Ribera del Duero, ringing the Duero river plateau 800 metres up, is one of Spain's most extreme and most thrilling wine regions. Its dry, high-altitude vineyard conditions force Tempranillo to concentrate, yielding dark, dense, age-worthy reds with intense fruit.

The region's claim to fame was long the legendary Vega Sicilia and its Unico cuvée - among the world's great wines. Today a wave of modernists have expanded Ribera's fame with dense, elegant reds.

For the buyer, Ribera del Duero is Spain's answer to a top Cabernet or Barolo - powerful, structured and rewarding with food and age.

Terroir & Soil

Sandy-clay and chalk soils over the river terraces, cooled by altitude (800-900m).

What to Expect from the Wines

  • · Ribera del Duero Tempranillo (locally 'Tinto Fino') is deep, concentrated and age-worthy.
  • · The wines show ripe black fruit, chocolate, vanilla and firm, structured tannins.
  • · Great vintages produce Spanish 'PĂ©trus' - the cult reds of Vega Sicilia, Pingus and more.
