Europe
Hungary
Ancient Central European wine country - the sweet Furmint of Tokaj and fresh, food-friendly whites and reds from across the Carpathian basin.
Hungary has one of Europe's oldest and most storied wine cultures, anchored by Tokaj - the world's first classified wine region, famous for its luscious botrytised AszĂş and its signature Furmint grape.
Furmint is Hungary's great white variety - a high-acid, mineral grape that makes everything from bone-dry, age-worthy whites to the celebrated sweet Aszú aged in small oak barrels called gönc.
Beyond Tokaj, the volcanic slopes of the Eger and Villány regions add fresh whites and robust reds, and Hungarian wine is enjoying a well-deserved modern renaissance.

Buying Hungary Wine
- › Dry Furmint from Tokaj is the smart modern buy - mineral, saline and food-friendly at a fraction of the price of Burgundy.
- › Aszú is graded by puttonyos (sweetness level); 5 and 6 puttonyos are the serious, age-worthy sweet wines.
- › For reds, try Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) from Sopron or the robust blends of Eger's famous Bull's Blood.
