Tuscany

Central Italy, around Florence and Siena, stretching from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian coast.

Warm, dry summers and cool nights; hilltop vineyards benefit from good diurnal temperature swings.

Tuscany is the postcard of Italian wine - rolling cypress-lined hills, medieval hill-towns and some of the world's most beloved red wines. Chianti and its distinguished sibling Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are all built on the Sangiovese grape.

Since the 1970s the region has also been home to the Super Tuscan phenomenon, where producers blended Cabernet and Merlot with Sangiovese to make wines that rivalled the world's greatest - and commanded matching prices.

For the buyer, Tuscany offers superb everyday reds, cult-status collectables, and some of the most food-friendly wine on earth.

Terroir & Soil

Clay-limestone 'galestro' and sandy 'alberese' soils; altitudes from 200-600m give freshness and structure.

What to Expect from the Wines

  • · Sangiovese is Tuscany's lifeblood, producing Chianti, Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile and Brunello.
  • · The 'Super Tuscan' movement - international grapes with serious winemaking - created world-class wines in Bolgheri.
  • · Whites like Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Vermentino are fresh and underrated.
